People Who Woke Up In The Middle Of Surgery

#1 Carol Weiher

Carol Weiher woke up in the middle of an eye removal surgery. While under the knife for removal of her right eye in 1988, Carol woke up in the middle of the surgery to the sound of disco music playing. The next thing she heard was, "cut deeper, pull harder!" The muscle relaxants she was given by the doctors had made it impossible for her to signal for help or to move. All she was able to do through the procedure was pray and scream in her head "I'm awake! I'm awake!"

#2 Rosie Dumas

Rosie experienced anesthesia awareness on two separate occasions. The first was at three years old when she was awake for an entire appendix removal and heard every word the doctors were saying. The second time was when she was sixteen, and having an operation to correct some major breathing problems. She said that "the pain was so bad that I kept falling in and out of consciousness" and that she felt every cut and tug the surgeon and his team made on her body. She was awarded over $13,000 for her pain when her parents sued the doctors due to her constant nightmares and fears after the trauma.

#3 Linda Waltz

Linda Waltz was having routine gall bladder surgery in 2008 when she experienced her nightmare. She was given the incorrect dose of anesthesia and says "At this point I am aware but I could not scream because of the breathing tubes but all I could think was that I have got to move some way." She says that there are no words to describe her torment and pain. "I was fighting for allI had in my mind to move as they proceeded to cut a second incision into my rib cage."

#4 Dianne Parr

Dianne Parr could only listen in sheer horror as she heard the oral surgeon ask for his scalpel. She was lying on the operating table for a tooth extraction that was assessed, a procedure she was assured was very 'routine". She felt the surgeon lean into her body and pushing downward before pulling back up. A searing pain shot through her entire body and she says "it felt as though the tooth was being pulled from my feet, not my mouth."

#5 June Carson

June Carson suffered a cardiac arrest during her surgery. As she lay on the operating table, supposedly unconscious, the surgeon made his first incision. His cold scalpel cut her belly open and she let out a silent scream of agony. The anaesthetist calculated her dosage incorrectly and while she was unable to move she could feel every torturous second of her operation. She felt as though she would die when she felt the knife cut into her stomach. "It's impossible to describe the pain but it felt as though I was being tortured," she said.

#6 Jonathan Perkins

Jonathan Perkins of Britain required a surgery that required cutting open his left leg and drilling into the bone. He was anesthetized but remained conscious throughout the entire operation. He had tubes down his nose and throat and was aware, but unable to move. Someone then grabbed his leg with a very hard motion and began applying a tourniquet to his groin. It was at this point that he realized that his operation was just beginning, and he was unable to let the surgeons know he was fully awake. The pain became unbearable as he lay there while they doctors sliced open his entire leg and drilled four holes into his bone. He later recovered and sued the doctors and the hospital and was awarded 15,00 pounds for his pain and suffering.

#7 Sarah Thomas

The 23-year old was undergoing a routine tonsil removal in 2013 when she woke up mid-surgery and was unable to move. Sarah claims she could feel everything throughout the traumatic ordeal and that the pain was ‘agonising'. She couldn't alert the nurses to their mistake and was forced to endure the unbearable horror of being awake for her tonsillectomy until one of the nurses said, "I think she is waking up." At that point, she felt something cold and fell back to sleep but she says she now suffers from post-traumatic stress, panic attacks, and nightmares about the surgery. Sarah was awarded nearly £22,000 due to a malfunction with the anesthesia machine.
